In our home group last night we considered this question:
In his sermon this past Sunday, Phil said that the Christian life is one of humility (recognizing our sin and guilt) and grateful celebration (recognizing what Christ has done for us in justifying us). Our lives should be characterized by joy. What reasons do [...]

In last week’s sermon on Romans 3:25-26 Phil referenced The Great Exchange by Jerry Bridges and Bob Bevinton. Here is the quote he read on God being a God of love and a God of justice:
“We must never forget that our God is a God of justice, and that he therefore [...]
Application Questions from Sunday’s Sermon (Rom 3:9-20)

Last Sunday we looked at Romans 3:9-20 (listen to the sermon), and we used Paul’s words to the Romans to do a quick self-examination of our total depravity. Paul is arguing like a prosecutor for our guilt, all so that we would find ourselves before a holy God speechless in our conviction. This [...]

In yesterday’s sermon, Daniel Baker read 1 Peter 2:9-10 to describe our responsibility and privilege to worship God:
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once [...]

Yesterday, Brent Detwiler preached at our church on the subject of biblical manhood and womanhood (listen to the sermon). Here are some resources for digging deeper into this topic:
In 2004, Wayne Grudem spoke on “Men & Women: Similarities and Differences” at the New Attitude conference. The MP3 of this message is available for [...]

By sovereign coincidence, Phil preached yesterday on Mark 10:13-52, the same Sunday that our church practiced both baptism and the Lord’s Supper. This passage is book ended by key statements that describe or demonstrate the kind of faith that God requires of us, and this relates closely to our baptism:
Because of your hardness of heart

Phil preached on Mark 10:1-12 this past Sunday. Verses 3-6 say this:
He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart, he wrote you this commandment. [...]
Calvin on the sanctity of life

Yesterday was sanctity of life Sunday; providentially, we reached the sixth commandment in our series in Exodus.
John Calvin has this to say on the sanctity of life, connecting Leviticus 19:14 with the sixth commandment:
Since the Law comprehends under the word murder, all the wrongs whereby men are unjustly injured, that cruelty was especially to be [...]
Fighting for Life in a Culture of Death

Pope John Paul II called the West a “culture of death.” By this he was alluding to,
“murder, genocide, abortion, euthanasia, or wilful self-destruction, whatever violates the integrity of the human person, such as mutilation, torments inflicted on body or mind, attempts to coerce the will itself; whatever insults human dignity, such as subhuman living conditions, [...]
Applications for the Third Commandment

Some questions from Philip Ryken (Written in Stone, 98-99) to help us better apply the third commandment:
1. Why did your parents choose your name (special meaning, named for someone, etc.)?
2. What does God’s name–YHWH–tell us about his character? (read Exo 3 for a refresher).
3. How do you see God’s name misused in the world today? [...]
